climb

No One's

Blow out the candles,
Bring the kites down from the sky.
Close all the windows
And lock the doors.
Spill the beads on the floor.

You are not mine.

Trample on the flowers in the garden,
Unplug the fan.
Empty the drawers, clear the shelves.
Paint over the doodles on the wall.

You are not mine.

Let the ice cream melt in the sun.
Let the cup of coffee lose its flavor.
Lower the volume, shut the curtains.
Bleed the light out of the room.

You are not mine.

Let no words pass between us,
Feign ignorance.
Pretend no promises were made.
Return my shirts and forget favors.

I am not yours.

update

i wrote this poem while i was on field work, although some lines had already been nesting in my head for a time. oddly, the lines presented themselves to me in both english and filipino. just to see how seamlessly the poem translates to the vernacular (unlike, say, japanese poetry, whose form -- i.e., the calligraphy -- is just as much a part of the poetry as the words), i've decided to give it a shot, and here's the result. i hope my friends eugene evasco and anthony dela cruz will look kindly upon this.

Magkunwaring mangmang.
Magpanggap na walang pangakong binitawan.
Ibalik ang damit at kalimutan ang itinulong.

Ako'y hindi sayo.
